Commuting

If you are considering commuting to work then the first thing to do is contact your employer to see if they are signed up to Cyclescheme. This a Government sponsored scheme  in which your employer buys the bike and you repay the cost from gross salary. This means that you pay less National Insurance and income tax and can expect to make net savings of 40% or more on the total cost. We have details of this scheme in the shop if you want to know more.

As a commuter you will be looking for a reliable utility bike for regular use in all weathers, summer and winter, perhaps with tougher tyres to minimise the risk of punctures. In addition you will need other practical things such as a lock, lights, functional clothing for all weathers and a bag to carry day to day items or even a laptop. We stock a wide selection of products that will make your daily commute a breeze.

Popular bikes in this category include the Trek 7.3 FX  and 7.5 FX both also available in a women’s version denoted the WSD, the Trek Portland is also a good option for someone wanting a slightly faster bike with dropped handlebars. From the Marin range there are models like the Muirwoods and Novato with 26″ wheels and smooth fat tyres for good manoeverability in traffic or on cycle paths. The Muirwoods is also available in a 29er version for taller riders. From Specialized any of the Tricross range would be suitable.

All of these bikes would also be suitable for touring as they can take a pannier rack and have triple chainsets with low gears.

Womens Bikes

Many of the models shown above are also available in a specific womens version. This means that they have a shorter reach, narrower handlebars and a ladies saddle as standard. The colour choice will also be different.
