Childrens Bikes
Children can generally start to manage a bike between their 2nd and 3rd birthdays. The best way to start is with a 12″ wheel stroller bike which has no pedals so they don’t need to learn to balance straight away.
Children’s bikes are characterised by having smaller wheels than an adult bike and the progression is 12″, 16″ 20″ and 24″ and this determines the ’size’ of the bike rather than frame size. The upper age at which a rider would still start on a childs bike is about 8 or 9 but this does depend on size and confidence in riding. As a parent you will want to judge it right so that the bike is a little big to start with then the child grows into it and eventually grows out of it. Typically a child can expect to own the bike for 2 to 3 years.
The smallest adults bike has a 13″ frame with 26″ wheels and is not much taller than the 24″ models but is longer due to the larger wheels and a we have had riders as young as 9 fit these. We stock models from Trek and Specialized and these are all built to last and can be passed on to brothers/sisters or other family members when the original owner has outgrown it.
